Realism is a term we cannot evade during the practice of our artistic research and creation. In my point of view, the significance of this term was presented in two aspects-realism could provide a context for the existence of art work, on the other hand, it could also offer the possibility of an artistic style. So, how should we read the implication of realism in contemporary context is the topic I will explore in this essay.Antony Lopez Garcia, a Spanish painter, was one of the most significant artists in contemporary art world. His oeuvre carried the Roma tradition forward, and also responded the contemporary world in his unique manner. Base on the reviewing of Lopez’s art practice, reading of his oeuvre, and analyzing his artistic style and the pictorial information, we will be able to figure out a clue-there was a profound relationship between the artist’s personal expression and the environment he lived in. Though the case study, we could get a better understanding of realism in contemporary context.
