Japanese indirect anaphora is one of language phenomena in daily communication.Working on a probe to its bottom will both help a good command of the anaphoricphenomena and guarantee the consistency of a discourse in reaching a completeunderstanding and favorable purpose in the cross-cultural communication. To work itout, this paper, based on the cognitive theory of the world and the principle of referencepoint-theory of domains, aims to analyze and determine both the cognitive basis andits mechanism of the indirect anaphora in Japanese. Above all things, it is to identify thediscourse cognitive reference point in analyzing the indirect anaphora, for the functionsit performs in commanding and setting a contextual text. Since language has twoimportant principles, namely, economic principle and communication object principle,they will play a significant role both in using and understanding of Japanese indirectanaphora.
