Semantic slant of non-emotional words has been a topic within the scope of modernChinese semantics. From the micro point of view, using a combination of synchronicand diachronic research methods, this paper tries to deeply analyze the phenomenon ofthe word "opinion" which may cause semantic slant.Based on an exhaustive research into the linguistic corpus, we find that the word"opinion" has a clear semantic development track, that is, at first it only shows theneutral meaning, then gradually expands to show the negative sense in certain modes,to the modern Chinese, it is common that the word "opinion" is slanted. At thesynchronic level, the neutral usage of "opinion" is still very common, which is closelyrelated to its function of meaning. In addition, the mode of "有+None" is not the uniqueone which can bring about semantic slant. After observation and analysis, once"opinion" appears in the appraisive contexts, its meaning will tend to the negative end.In terms of linguistic facts, it is the effect of pragmatics frequency which plays thekey role. The fundamental cause of the "opinion" tending to negative sense is that thenegative frequency is higher than the positive frequency. Seen from aspect ofpsychology, semantic slant of non-emotional words is completed by the association ofcontext frequency.
