As one of famous and active young writer in the world of Tibetan contemporary literary, Skyab Chen Bde Grol is achieving the favor and attention among the young generation with his superb writing style and profound theme. Many of his poetry, novels and plays have been translated into English, French and German etc. Although he is more or less controversial, but is still known as a model of young writers in the world of Tibetan contemporary literary. Therefore, in the study of Tibetan contemporary literature, Skyab Chen Bde Grol plays an important role.In general, any literary research work should not purely center on narrative; at the same time, it also should not only focus on criticism. It is important to take a holistic approach. The writer’s life, the cultural environment in which he or she was born, and the literary context in which the research has been conducted are three essential elements to evaluate any research work. Therefore, it is not enough to only observe the literary text;in a similar manner, it is not enough to only look at the writer’s personal life when evaluating a literary research work. In light of this argument, I investigated both Skyab Chen Bde Grol’s personal life, and his literary research work during the course of writing my thesis. Therefore, the bulk of this research paper focuses upon both the writer’s personal life, and his literary work.Chapter one talks about Skyab Chen Bde Grol’s thirty four years of life experience. Considering his life experiences play a critical role in his literary research work, I aimed to explore the social environment in which he was born; the impacts of his wealth of life experiences on his literary work; and the cultural context in which he lived. Apart from his literary work, I also examined his personal life, and further investigated the historical and social context of some of his famous work. In doing so, I examined how a famous literary artist approaches reality of everyday life and society.Chapter two primarily analyzed some of Skab Chen Bde Grol’s famous poems. By focusing on some of Skab Chen Bde Grol’s famous and successful selection of poems, I examined the external features and internal logic of these poems through thorough observation of the form and structure of his poems word-by-word, line-by-line, and sentence-by-sentence. In this study, I avoided exploring questions about the central themes of his poems; instead, I focused on the distinctive structure of his poems; the poet’s sentimental penetration into his poems; the uniqueness of his poems; and the processes of his literary creation.Chapter three specifically discusses Skab Chen Bde Grol’s novel,The Gray Melody (Tib:klu skad skya bo), along with some of his other short novels. I aimed to understand the literary techniques that the author employed in his novels, including metafiction, collage and parody. By placing Skyab Chen Bde Grol’s novels into somewhat broader Tibetan literary context, I discussed the strengths and weaknesses of his novels, and observed them in chronological order. By looking at the characteristics of his novels, I examined Skyab Chen Bde Grol’s literary orientation towards modern and post-modern literary creation, and how he deciphered the fine line between fantasy and reality in his work. Furthermore, in chapter three, I discussed his2001novel titled, The Cemetery at the Foot of Snow-land and the Shambala Engle. Specifically, I analyzed how this novel differs from other novels with respect to its structure and theme. Moreover, this novel, I argued, sheds a dim light on few respects by virtue of its excessive element of fantasy, peaks and valleys of its plot, and its lack of any narrative.Chapter four largely discussed two of Skyab Chen Bde Grol’s plays, namely The Daughter of Snow (Tib:gang kyi bu mo) and Drolma’s Crotch (Tib:sgrol ma’i rkang snam). Here I observed backgrounds and themes of these two plays in the context of the creation and development of Tibetan dramas, as well as I explored the changes in author’s thinking occurred from2002to2003. By focusing on the themes of these two plays, by further examining the trajectories of Tibetan drama in a broader context, I investigated the position of these two plays in the creation and development of Tibetan drama.Chapter five broadly discussed Skyab Chen Bde Grol’s literary works by observing his literary thoughts. By observing how he aimed to reveal social problems and significance in his every single literary work. I argued that two conceptual sites, namely,"The Nature of Literature as the Nature of Game,"and "Impermanence" lie at the heart of Skyab Chen Bde Grol’s literary works. Finally, I revisited the previous chapters of my thesis, and further aimed to get a closer understanding of Skyab Chen Bde Grol’s literary works.
