As a regional cultural thing in rural areas, peasant painting of Hu County is the product of the construction of mass culture in the early days of foundation of the People’s Republic of China. Peasant painting has recorded the constructions of the rural areas and the living conditions of farmers in Shaanxi province since1950s. The works of peasant painting have promoted various kinds of constructions and met the cultural demands of the masses in rural areas. At the same time, they have played the recognizing, aesthetic and educational function of the work of fine arts to educate the masses with the profound ideology.Peasant painting of Hu County emerges in the1950s under the combined effects of the traditional culture, the collective economic system and mass-art policy. It has gone through three stages, from rise, development and prosperity to transition. Peasant painting of Hu County rises from the development of the spare-time arts of the masses in the1950s. It begins with art activities at grass roots and establishes its basic forms under the promotion of mural movement. In the1960s and1970s, the team of peasant painting has been further developed and created lots of works. Many paintings had participated in different levels of the exhibition many times at that time. Peasant painting of Hu County entered the stage of development and prosperity in the organization and art during the Social education movement and the Cultural Revolution. With the social transformation and the focus transition of national working after the Reform and Opening up in1978, peasant painting has transformed from primary thought to creative thought in the field of art and commercialization has became its typical feature.Peasant painting of Hu County has shown a strong characteristic of the times since the1950s. The course of social development of China determines that peasant painting has always shown the agricultural industry, peasant’s life and the construction in rural areas and recorded the developments and transformations of peasants, agriculture and the countryside. The production and construction in rural areas and the daily life of peasants under collective economic system and the rural household contract responsibity system have been fully demonstrated in peasant painting, showing obvious phases. The function of ideological and political propaganda and education of peasant painting has experienced a process from strong to weak. It is strong before Reform and Opening up and becomes weak after this policy. The contents, composition, color, painting materials, style of peasant painting are showing unique characteristics. Peasant paintings are also full of local feelings and show remarkable specificity and diverse features.Peasant painting of Hu County is of strong historical, artistic and economic values and it is with great significance to protect and develop it. Nowadays, it faces several serious problems, such as a deteriorating creation environment, artistic vulgarization, the lack of participants and the weak organization and counseling and so on. We should take measures to draw attention of the government, collate information, declare non-material cultural heritage, strengthen the team of writers and counselors and get a accurate positioning between commodity and art work in order to protect this art and promote its sustainable development.
