Traditional translation studies have taken the translation activity as a staticlinguistic transferring process and regarded it as an individual activity takingplace in a sealed space for a long time. But with the development and maturity oftranslation theory and practice, the fact proves that translation does not takeplace in a sealed space and the subjects involved are not the translator alone at all,but involves some other factors such as original author, the readers, source andtarget cultures. Any choice or decision of the translator is the result ofcommunication with other factors. And the best way to achieve suchcommunication is to have dialogue. Under the constraints of thought ofopposite-binary and the centerism, dialogical thought would bring a new fresh air totranslation studies. The thesis, based on Bakhtin’s dialogue theory, taking Yu Guangzhong’stranslation of Wilde’s dramas for examples, makes a study of dialogical analysis ofdiscourse in drama translation process. It analyzes the dialogicality and dialoguerelations taking place in the three layers of drama translation process and alsoanalyzes their influence and guidance to the completion of these layers. Thethesis designs out the drama translation process as the starting activity, theunderstanding of text and the reproduction of target text on the basis of theprevious studies on it. Dialogical analysis of discourse, as an important methodto analyze and understand literary work, includes the dialogicality of literarydiscourse and dialogicality of humane discourse, in other words, the dialogue inform and dialogue spirit. Double-voiced discourse is the major representation ofliterary discourse. Wilde’s dramas abound in double-voiced discourse and to dig outthe double-voiced discourse can help the translator to construct text meaning.Dialogue spirit has a more common application in translation studies. The thesisanalyzes the dialogue relationship made in the three layers, which are, thedialogue between the translator and original author and target culture; thedialogue between the translator with the text and target readers. And with thesedialogues, the translator realizes the selection of the translating text, theconstruction of meaning and the choice of translation strategies. Through thedialogue with the drama audiences, and with the consideration of the audience’shorizon of expectation and their acceptability, the translator employs a flexible translating strategy, and thus helps to translate a version that is more acceptableand suitable for stage performance. The thesis finds that there is abundant dialogicality in drama translation processand such dialogicality can help the translator make choices and thus guide histranslation practice. And the thesis makes a tentative attempt to develop andpromote a dynamic, polybasic and more reasonable dialogical thought for dramatranslation practice, that is: with the translator as an intermediary, the text as theobject, a multi-relationship of dialogues between translator and author, text, reader and culture in the translation process. Dialogical perspective provides arelatively new angle for translation theory and it gives a relatively overall andmore reasonable interpretation to translation process of drama.
