A Report On The Translation Of Chapter Seven Of Translating Law

This is a report on the translation practice of Chapter 7 of Translating Law,written by Deborah Cao,which is a scholarly work on legal translation.Chapter 7mainly discusses the translation of international legal instruments.The report introduces the source text and the translation process which is divided into three phases: pre-translation,while-translation and post-translation.The report attaches emphasis on the discussion of the issue of extra-linguistic knowledge,the issue of terminology translation and the issue of attributive clause translation.Due to the lack of extra-linguistic knowledge,the report proposes three coping strategies,including consulting dictionary of law,consulting writings in the fields concerned and getting information from the Web.The report also elaborates on the issue of terminology translation.Based on previous studies,five principles of terminology translation are summarized,namely,being accurate,being consistent,being concise,being transparent,and following the conventions.International legal instrument titles as a special type of terminology frequently presented in the ST,two translation strategies,following the well-established translation and translating literally,are stated with examples to explain how they are applied.This report also proposes the skills for attributive clause translation,namely preposing,division and fusion.The principles,strategies and skills analyzed in this report may be of reference value for other translators to improve their translation quality.
