The bambooflute and Xun are the most ancient traditional instruments of China. The bone flute unearthed in Jiahu Wuyang Henan, the Xun unearthed in Banpo Xi’an and the ancient whistle unearthed in Hemudu Zhejiang, all indicate that the bambooflute and Xun instruments in China had a development history of over seven or eight thousand years. Along with the development of modern material culture, people’s needs for spiritual culture also increase. The ancient traditional instruments of Chinese bambooflute and Xun with a history of one thousand years gradually begin to incorporate into the modern civilization and become very popular, and a large number of performers, composers and cultural scholars who are dedicated in the performance, creation and research of traditional flute and Xun instruments sprung up, in which Liu Kuanren is one of the outstanding representatives. Liu is the first national wind master degree’s holder in China, a doctoral supervisor and the chairman of China Xun Culture Association. Liu is good at playing various ethnic musical instruments, especially good at flute and Xun instruments. For decades, he has devoted himself to the excavation, performance, creation and scientific research of traditional flute and Xun instruments and the popularization education of national instruments......which has gained outstanding achievements. Liu is a typical representative of the new generation of performers who have distinct playing styles, and Liu is a master who practises with seeking and pioneering spirits, and inherits and carries forward Chinese traditional culture. Liu’s excellent playing skills and his unique playing style have a great influence in society, and Liu enjoys a decisive status in China’s national wind playing field.The author tries to start from the study of Liu Kuanren himself and his specific performance works to analyze the causes and features of his performance style, and theoretically analyze the performance art from a traditional aesthetic point of view, so as to expand performers’thoughts and further enrich the playing skills and artistic expression of Chinese bambooflute and Xun. This paper comprehensively studies into Liu’s performance arts of bambooflute and Xun by utilising the method of literature, induction, comparison and example method etc. The paper consists of an introduction and four chapers, the introduction is about the cause of the thesis and an overview of bambooflute and Xun development and its present research status; the second chapter is the detailed introduction of Liu Kuaren’life art experiences with bambooflute and Xun; the third chapter specifically analyzes the causes of Liu’s playing style and studies into his performance works, techniques and skills and performance forms, and summarizes his performance characteristics; and the fourth chapter comprehensively expounds Liu’s performance arts of bambooflute and Xun, summarizes Liu’s performance achievements, and proposes prospects of Liu’s performance arts of bambooflute and Xun in the future.
