David Herbert Lawrence(1885-1930),was honored as one of thegreatest writers, also has been one of the most controversial figures inhistory of English Literature in the20th century.He was aautobiographical and emotional writer,life experiences and age has agreat influence on his literary creation.Lawrence believed that novel isthe highest lever for expressing thoughts and emotions,novel is the bestway for people to comprehend the reality.Lawrence not only famousfor his novels,but also many short stories,theirs personality andcharacters have given us a deep impression.Even though heconcentrated his attention on novels,said that he helped out hisincome by writing short stories,we could not neglect the achievementof his short stories. Lawrence began writing short stories at1907,creatednearly seventy short stories during his life.Although the variety of subjectmatter and style in his different period,this short stories oftencorresponding with his novels,we could find the creation themes andartistic characteristics.This thesis consists of three parts:Introduction,body andconclusion.The Introduction gives a brief survey of production on thedomestic,collection of Lawrences short stories, the literary status ofLawrence,and an account of the intention of writing this thesis.The body is divided into three chapters.The first chapter expoundsthe variety of Lawrences short stories subject matter.The subject matterincludes four types:miners life,male-female contradiction,about war and return to the nature.The subject matter aboutmale-female contradiction includes young people s love and maritalrelations,this short stories has occupied the largest proportion.The second chapter analyses alienation theme in Lawrences shortstories.Alienation theme is divided into three types:alienation relationship between human being and nature,human beingalienation,alienation relationship between human beings. The age in whichLawrence lived showed capitalist industrialization rapid growth,withexcellent insight,he discovered the harm to human being and thewhole society which came from modern civilization,he portrayed aseries of alienation of social phenomenon and tried to search for a wayto save humanity.Lawrence based himself upon treating therelationship between human being and nature,and between humanbeings to express his ideas about salvation of the world.The third chapter analyses artistic characteristics in Lawrence s shortstories.Artistic characteristics is divided into fourtypes:irony,contrast,symbol,psychoanalysis.Symbol include naturalimagery symbol,subject symbol,myth archetype symbol;Psychoanalysisinclude direct interior monologueand indirect interior monologue,use nature to reflect the change ofthe thought of characters,conveythe inner mood of characters by omniscient narration.Symbol andpsychoanalysis are the centre of artistic characteristics,with irony andcontrast constitute artistic characteristics in Lawrences short stories.The conclusion is a brief overview of Lawrences status andcontribution in history of English Literature, Lawrences short stories has hisspecial style and artistic charm, his limitations aboutideas guiding creation in Literature and art.
