In view of the mire of plagiarizing the words and lines from ancient poems in the Ming dynasty, this paper analyzes the literary thought of Tu Long, a forerunner of poetic creation in the middle and later part of Ming dynasty, both upholding "the return to the ancients" and opposing "stiff imitation" of ancient poems. A basic study of texts, which is focused on the special relationship between reaction and innovation, concludes that in the midst of reaction whirlpool, Tu was aware that the true purpose was to seek a new source of poetical inspiration and to set up a new poetic example. Then through an analysis of the life background and poems of Tu Long, this paper explores the true literary thought of Tu, a worship of ancient styles without stiff imitation. This paper makes its argument from three aspects in four parts.Introduction and literature review. This part states the selection process of the topic, innovation, and existing researches and the theoretical implications of this paper, description of the literary background and status in the middle and later part of Ming dynasty, and locating Tu Long in the literary history-----pursuing return to the ancient style and embrace of newness. The times in which Tu Long lived and his life experience contributed to the forming of his poetic style and literary thoughts. The second part analyzed the impacts of the emancipated thoughts in later Ming dynasty. The longing to shake off mental shackles and to pursue a new way of life describes the rough and frustration-ridden life of Tu Long.An analysis of the content and style of Tu’s poems leads to a lucid conclusion that the difference between Tu and other poets who advocated return to the ancients lies in the fact that Tu’s poetry reflects the real life and true feelings, characteristic of the social thoughts and literary theories in the later part of the Ming dynasty.Tu Long’s creation of poems was not confined by his worship of ancient literary style. Literary reaction had taken its course when Tu Long became a poet. Tu Long set an excellent exemplary of classic works while opposing rigid and stiff imitations. He expounded that the true source of literary creativity is "feeling", which in turn gushes from the bottom of the author’s heart.
