This thesis deals with the artistic form in the aesthetics field. The thesis employs several aesthetical theories, such as Russian Formalism and Gestalt Theory, to summarize the aesthetic rules in the course of the evolution of metrical verse - its birth, development and latest changes. Those theories are of great help in illustrating the internal aesthetical mechanism. However, in the study of a given artistic form, further deepening, complements, even corrections of those theories are needed. Moreover, the causes of the evolution of metrical verse are also discussed and analyzed under the guidance of structuralism and literary sociology.The thesis may be divided into two parts. There are six chapters in the first part. The first five chapters mainly describe and analyze the birth, crystalization and evolution of metrical verse. The changes of aesthetical standards closely relating to the evolution of form are also discussed. Chapter six induces the aesthetical rules of the evolution of metrical verse on the basis of the first five chapters. The second part, including chapter seven and chapter eight, studies the causes of the evolution from two aspects—the literature structure and transmitting media.Chapter one focuses on the form of metrical verse.
