Chinese Modern writer Eileen Chang has been complimented as “a hedonist, whoenjoys an artistic form of life”;“the utmost aesthetics of the19thcentury”. The pursuit ofinstant pleasure and hedonistic lifestyle of the Aestheticism has been popular in the1920sand1930s of Shanghai. Dated back to the late1900s, Oscar Wilde, one the representativesof the Aestheticism, British play writer, poet, novelist and critics, challenged the traditionalart theories and ingrained ideologies with his unique while unconventional perspective ofartistic theory and lifestyle, having a deep impact on the Western as well as Easternliterature across the century.Chinese well-known writer Fu Lei was the first person who found the similaritiesbetween Oscar Wilde and Eileen Chang. The following dissertation will focus on the worksand theories of Eileen Chang, attempting to find the development as well as the discardbetween the Aestheticism and Eileen Chang’s works, and discuss the construction andfeature of Eileen Chang’s Aestheticism.
