| Changshi Ji, written by Hu Shi, as the first work on literature revolution, has exerted a great impact on new-vernacular literature. Since then, it was republished to the fourth edition in a short time, and was revised and deleted in1920, which gave rise to a hot debate. With the help of version analysis method, this paper, which presented various discussion in many aspects, includes three chapters:Chapter One analyses the four versions by means of contrasting between the original edition&the fourth edition as well as the third edition&fourth edition, interpreting the phenomena of adding, revising and deleting poems, and clarifies from the problems as below:(1)Adding poems make it possible for us to know the changes he encountered in different periods.(2)The reason why he revised the poems tells us his ideas about poems.(3)The author attached much importance to deleting the poems and his friends’ advice showed their ideas and influenced his ideas of vernacular poems. What’s more, deleting the poems indicates his initiative for literature history.Chapter Two begins on the debates about the poems in the preface of the second version, and then refers to a book:The Criticisms and Debates on Changshi Ji (written by Hu Huaichen), whose both parts focus on the syllable (form) and content (ideology) of the poems, presenting Hu Shi’s ideas:"Liberation on Poetry Forms" and "Introduction of New Ideas". This paper shows that the debates are essential part of literature activities which reflect not only the social reactions but also the significance to the formation of the poetry.Chapter Three is concerned with the different assessments of the poetry in the literature history, encompassing two aspects:on one hand, it tells different ideas, which are indispensable in the activities of poetry at that time, such as Xue Heng School, New Moon School, and Fei Ming etc; on the other hand, ideas in later periods not only reflects the significant role in activities from the perspective of vernacular history, language tools and poetry aesthetics. In a word, this paper illustrates the major debates arising from the poetry and summarizes the implications of the poetry on a basis of version analysis. However, Changshi Ji is so complicated that the problems shown can be further explored. From the standpoint of literature history, these literature can’t be perceived as an end but an opportunity to develop itself in a better way. |
