The Visual Empire

This thesis emphasizes the cultural aspect of the British Empire during the period from mid19th century to early20th century in order to explore the representations of the imperial ideologies and the imperial atmosphere that once prevailed in Victorian England. Methodologically, this study not only adopts the traditional approach, taking historical texts as the evidence, but also highlights the historical images that visualized, mystified, and enabled the imperial power.
