From The Sweet Day Alone Thick To Explore Drama Translation Colloquial Language

The present thesis for MTI degree is composed of two parts. Part One is a translation of the first act from Arthur Miller’s The Man Who Had All the Luck, and Part Two is a review and comment on the translation, mainly discussing the major chanllenges encountered in the process of translation and my strategies for them. Hopefully, the discussion could provide some insight and examples for drama translation.Different from other literary genres of poem, novel and essay, drama has its own form and is often conditioned by both literary rules and requirements for stage performance. That is to say, whether it is good or not is decided by the reaction of audience, so the words should be oral, clear, easily-understandable and well-rhythmed.The guidelines also suitable for drama translation. Besides, apart from being a complicated language transition system, drama translation also reflects the different cultures and traditional appreciation to the beauty between two different countries. The process of drama translation is very dificult. However, while translating this drama, the author noticed that some strategies can be used to improve this situation, for instance, adding or cutting down some words at proper places or showing tha same meaning but in an exactly opposite or even different way, which can do a great help to drama translation.
