To some extent, the anti-traditional spirit of the Ming and Qing Dynasty was a kind of rebellion under the circumstance of big social change to traditional culture. It appeared in the fields like politics, economic, ethic, science, art and so on. The anti-traditional spirit was an important part of the Ming and Qing cultural history with the heaviest time characteristic.This paper argues that the traditional spirit which arised under the internal factors and external social factors, in politics is mainly embodied in measures of the reform of autocratic monarchy, and introspection and critical strength beyond the traditional culture of the autocratic monarchy. In the economic it claims to industry and commerce instead of heavy agriculture and suppressing the exporters. In the cultural it requires imperial improvement with "learning" spirit. China society under Ming and Qing Dynasty was a special period in the history, which inherited tradition, at the same time, contained Innovation. Enlightenment thinkers propagated against the traditional spirit to attack the social impact of traditional values. Utilitarian thought was recognized eventually, and social atmosphere and way of life also changed. Literary aesthetic interest began to highlight the humanism enlightenment thoughts, which had important theoretical significance and practical significance objectively on Chinese modern democracy. The anti-traditional spirit advocated by enlightenment thinkers had an important impact on social ethics, literary and artistic. It promoted the process of China’s modern democratic revolution, which played an irreplaceable role for traditional Chinese culture to be modernized. This article did comprehensive study and research about the background, contents and features of the anti-traditional spirit of the Ming and Qing Dynasty. It is trying to make an objective and fair assessment of the role that this spirit played in society of the day and in the process of modern Chinese democratic revolution, so that we can draw useful inspiration for the development of China’s modernization and achieve better inheritance and innovation of the traditional Chinese culture.
