This paper presents a semantic and collocational study of two groups of synonyms, namely daozhi and yinqi, and jidu and jiwei, based on (the language materials provided by)both native Chinese speaker’s corpus and foreign learner’s Chinese corpus. This researchmakes use of a special piece of software and adopts the methods of both qualitative andquantitative analysis in purpose of finding out the two groups of synonyms’ collocatingrules and semantic features, and ultimately contributing to the edition of synonymdictionaries. This paper consists of5chapters. Chapter1is an introduction to the research subjectof this paper, and the importance and methods of this research are clarified. Chapters2and3are devoted to the study of the collocations of two pairs of synonyms, using thedata-driven corpus linguistics research methods. We find out their similarities anddifferences in semantic prosody, highly frequently used collocates, and the semantic groupsand colligation of their collocates. Chapter4talks about the value of this study to TCFLand synonym dictionary edition. Based on the research findings of chapters2and3,chapter4tells the applicational value of this research in TCFL and dictionary compilation. We conduct a study on learners’ use of the two pairs of synonyms based on the HSKdynamic composition corpus, and point out the defects in current compilation of synonymdictionaries and give our remedial suggestions. Chapter5is a conclusion of the entirepaper, and the defects that need to be improved are also pointed out. This paper, instead of following traditional routes of collocation study, adopts themethods of quantitative and qualitative analysis, and probes in an objective and detailedway into the use of synonyms from the perspective of semantic prosody, their collocates, and the collocates’ semantic groups and colligation. The research results provide referencenot only for future related researches but also for TCFL and dictionary edition.
