Different people have different comments on Vladimir Nabokov. Some regard him as important as Hemingway in the field of American literature, however others doesn’t think so. Nabokov has a lot of personal writing styles, including changable language style and surprising plot. Some people think these points are the evidence which can prove that Nabokov put too much emphasis on the innovation of forms and skills while neglect the content itself. However, with many further researches conducted in recent years, people gradually begin to find that there are a lot of philosophy hidden beneath his stories. And these philosophies obviously influence the20th centry’s literature styles.This article mainly focus on the key word obsession. Nabokov once use this word to describe many of his protagonists in his interview record Strong Opinion. This kind of obsession comes from French Philosopher Bergson’s theory. And it is this Obsession that makes many of Nabokov’s protagonists seem like crazy man. Besides, the most important point is that obsession finally leads to another critical conception which is ecstasy. By using Ecstasy, Nabokov finally comes back to his own Russia(Which can not be done in the real world). From obsession to ecstasy, it is the main developing clue for Nabokov’s literature.The introduction part of this article will include Nabokov’s life story and the definition of obsession in psychology field.In the first chapter,we will mainly discuss to what extend Nabokov has been influenced by Bergson’s philosophy. And how much he has innovated in this field.In the second chapter, we will do close reading. We will find out how did he gradually put obsession and ecstasy in his works.In the third chapter, we will discuss the aesthetic value of ecstasy and obsession. And finally, how much they mean to Nabokov himself.
