This thesis includes two parts, i.e. translation and critical commentary. Nine letters are chosen from Fu Lei’s Family Letters, written by Chinese famous translator Fu Lei, as the translation material. The letters involve all aspects in daily life, the discussion of art, etc, which reflects that, in educating his son, Fulei did everything all by himself, taking all things into consideration and giving appropriate guidance and advice. The translation aims to introduce Chinese people’s educational thought to the English readers. The critical commentary is based on the translation of the nine letters. Taking the translation thought "closeness of spirit" as its guiding principle, the commentary mainly focuses on the elaboration of how the translation seeks to match the styles of the original text by using suitable methods to deal with sentences and paragraphs of different styles, and transmit accurately the thought and emotions of the original text by using proper ways to cope with different syntactical structures of the two languages.
