A Report On The C-E Translation Of Collection Of Family Letters Of Zeng Guofan(Excerpts)

With the acceleration of the process of Chinese traditional culture “going out”,the importance of translating literary works is increasing day by day.As one of the carriers of literary works,traditional family letters contain profound cultural heritage and historical value.A translator should be responsible for promoting the unique conventional culture contained in those Chinese literature works such as traditional family letters and should make an effort to introduce the local culture to the world.Based on the performance of Chinese-English translation of the eighteen family letters by Zeng Guofan,the translator attempts to test and improve her translation skills.In the process of conversion,the translator tries her best to exhibit her translated text by adopting some strategies in the English version of Ban Qiao Family letters and Fu Lei Family Letters.And she refers to the translation achievements concerning comparative studies that are adaptable to the Chinese-English translation of traditional family letters.In this way,the translated text can be accepted by the target readers to a large extent for her smooth and fluent translation.In the process of the English translation,the expression relevant to those traditional family letters with abundant connotations can be detected here and there,such as allusion in elegiac couplets and culture-loaded words,which are somewhat challenging to tackle.Therefore,the translator chooses to avail herself of the Theory of Translation as Adaptation and Selection to construe those phenomena in the translation process.In combination with the specific cases in the target text,she performs her analysis of the translation products of her own in three dimensions: linguistic dimension,cultural dimension and communicative dimension,which makes this translation report sound both practical and theoretical.Therefore,such problems about how to smoothly translate allusions in couplets and culture-loaded words based on faithfulness are well solved.This report is divided into five chapters.Chapter One is relevant to the general description of the translation task,including the background,purpose,significance,a brief introduction to the ST and writer as well as the structure of this report,so as to give readers a preliminary understanding of this report.Chapter Two is the process description,which consists of pre-translation,key and difficult points in the translation process,translating strategies,proofreading as well as problems to be solved,helping readers to grasp the whole process.Chapter Three is the theoretical basis that is the Theory of Translation as Adaptation and Selection,translator-centeredness,and three-dimensional transformation.Besides,the translating environment is also introduced here.Chapter Four is concerned with the case analysis,which analyzes the specific cases involved in the process of C-E translation from three-dimensional transformation under the guidance of the Theory of Translation as Adaptation and Selection.Besides,some regular phenomena are summarized in this chapter.Then comes to Chapter Five,the conclusion,is to summarize some major findings,point out some limitations of this report,and put forward some constructive suggestions for further studies.
