Why did such a literary community as Creation Society appear at the time of The May4th Movement? It is not a simple question. In line with their inner requirement, a group of returned youngsters who had majored in science or medicine took their literary paths. What kind of mental process did they experience at its early stage? In order to answer this question, this thesis makes their inner mentality as its research object. It explores the historical background and the process of the formation of their unique mentality as well as their mental tendency, psychological mechanism and emotional characteristics, trying to reveal the truth of the group of writers. Chapter I is about the mental phenomena in writers of Creation Society at its early stage:the mentality of confusion and anxiety came from the experience of "alienation" as well as their sentimentality. Chapter II analyses the social factors which caused these mental problems:the trend of "desalination of politics" while studying in Japan, the change from domestic university life to imperialist university life and the perceptual experience from the metropolitan life. Chapter III probes into the inner origin of the mental problems of writers of Creation Society at its early stage. Chapter IV discusses the significance and influence of the mentality of Creation Society writers at its early stage. The following is the innovative point in this thesis:Back to the historical and literary environment, it pursues their mentality from their lives of studying abroad and focuses on their deep hearts from all dimensions with different methods. Finally, it comes to the conclusion that the mental problems of Creation Society writers were the result of the interaction of times and self, with their "alienation" experience promoting changes in their identities and living paths, which paved their way to literature.
