Meanwhile, the process of the intercultural communication of documentary is always under the constraint that audiences form import markets feel difficult to understand or identify with the exotic culture in the documentary, including style, values, beliefs, history, mythology, social system, environment and pattern of behaviour, and the resultant loss of cultural value of documentary is known as "cultural discount".Western documentary always rank the top of the international documentary market. Documentaries made by BBC, Discovery or National Geographic rarely have cultural discount in overseas markets, but China’s high-quality local documentaries always meet with the predicament that they have to be shorten or re-edited before broadcasted. Cultural discount is one of the most important factors which caused the imbalance of international documentary market.How does the cultural discount in the intercultural communication of Chinese documentaries come about? How to avoid the cultural discount, in order to remove the gap between different cultures? Will these communication strategies universally applicable in overseas spread of Chinese documentary? These questions became the start point and foothold of this essay.This essay is based on the research on cultural discount, using narratology as theoretical foundation, and start with narrative strategies, narrative perspective, narrative structure, narrative mode of discourse and other aspects. It studies the narrative methods of The Forbidden City and Inside The Forbidden City, which are edited from the same material but by different teams from China and western country, trying to find the cultural diversity behind editing and narrative, in order to give out advices for Chinese documentary to spread aboard.
