Based on his own homeland, William Faulkner constructs a mythical kingdom-Yoknapatawpha County, that is shrouded by the shadows of the Civil War, slavery and the decadence of the southern traditions. Various inhabitants living in the county act on the certain stage of the mythical kingdom, and most of them possess abnormal or distorted human nature or personalities, meanwhile, they all have extraordinary, eccentric behaviors greatly different from others. They are just like the marionettes, hauled and dragged by a kind of mythical and irresistible power, which is not individual, but collective and universal. The eccentric behaviors are not governed by the personal complex, but by the inherited collective unconscious.Based on Carl G. Jung’s theory of The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious, probing into Faulkner’s alienation novels, this paper focuses on exploring the causes of the phenomena of alienation of human nature and their connotative meanings. The manifold phenomena of alienation in human nature reflected by the characters in Faulkner’s novels, mainly include four:the regression of human nature, the shadow of human nature, the rebirth and consummation of human nature, and the de-polarity of human nature, which profoundly cast light on Jung’s theory of The Archetypes and the Collective Unconscious.By the deep analysis and the detailed exploration on alienation of human nature of the Yoknapatawpha County’s inhabitants, this paper tries to make clear the affinity between Faulkner and Jung’s theory. The decode and analysis on the archetypal modes reflected by the four major human dissimilation phenomena, demonstrate the deep-going reasons for alienation of human nature, moving forward to manifest the Southerners’ spiritual inanity and disorder, which is caused by the degeneration and extinction of the traditions after the Civil War, and more deeply, bring to light the serious and permanent damage of the original survival environment and the corrosion of the ancient civilization caused by the technique’s process and the material civilization’s development, which consequently arises the spiritual crisis of all human beings.
