Mishima Yukio developed a uniqueness of his own when he enriched the Japanesetraditional culture and western culture. There were often some contradictory formulas in hisworks, for example: beauty and evil, love and ugliness, elegant and violent, youth and old,honest and hypocritical, hope and ruin and so on, which makes people feel that thecontradiction of Mishima was everywhere. Mishima always deduced these contradictoryconcept and idea with an inverse and risky spirit, which showed in his works when heportrayed the protagonist. From the intense conflict, we learn the weird outlook on beauty ofMishima, and find out that effect of different cultures, civil and military proposed by him andhis attitude to Mikado had all influence on the contradiction formed in the Mishima works.This paper consists of six chapters to review and learn the contradiction of Mishima’sworks. Chapter one is the preface of this paper. Aiming to the shortage of existing study aboutMishima’s works, such as the research was lack of diversification, the research contentsfocused mainly on one question or main works, the research objects was still very single, theresearch method was not comprehensive enough and so on., this chapter stands out thestarting point and innovation of this paper, and thus draw the breakthrough point of this paperwhich analyses in depth mainly from the angles of plot, figure, imagery, artistic feature, theinfluence of East and West culture and so on, and expounds specifically the complexity showneverywhere in Mishima’s works. Chapter two illustrates specifically the ambivalent attitude tothe life and death shown in the Mishima’s works, which expressed the worship of life throughadmiring men’s body as well as exaggerated the bloody death, and connected the solemn andstirring death with youth to express the dedication to the death. Then, this chapter analyses thereasons for his opposing attitude to life and death was mainly because that he was affected bydifferent cultures. Chapter three analyses emphatically the outlook on love of Mishima. In hiswriting, it shown out the longing for the beautiful and pure love as well as the detaileddepicting about the deformed and abnormal love. This chapter analyses this contradictorypsychology was related mainly to the postwar disturbed society, which presents certaincriticalness. Chapter four finds out the breakthrough point from that domestic commentsabout the Mishima disliking female were too biased, and combines with the interactionreasons of the background of Mishima, Japanese traditional culture and western ideas throughdepicting the female figures in Mishima’ works to summarize that the author had bothdisgusted and appreciating contradictory attitude to female. Chapter five focuses on analyzing the imagines of sea and fire in Mishima’ works, these imagines that not only contained life butalso symbolized death showed the contradictory of Mishima. The final chapter is theconclusion. This chapter expounds specifically the effect of contradictory character ofJapanese people and Mishima’s outlook on Mikado on Mishima and his works, and affirmsthat Mishima showed the unique exotic beauty in the contradictory and broke down thetraditional the art form taken harmony as beauty which showed a progress in the culture. Inthis sense, this paper has certain innovation and development, which is very valuable for us tolearn more completely and deeply the Mishima’s works.
