Eagleton make a new research and development about the value andconnotation of tragedy which based on the contemporary western social and culturalreality. Eagleton investigated many tragic ideas from Aristotle to contemporaryscholar, and made a new interpretation about the tragic hero, tragedy and the novel,tragedy and necessity, the effect of tragedy, tragedy and modernity, the value oftragedy and so on. Eagleton constructed his idea of tragic with a widely absorptionfrom Marx, Williams, Freud, lacan, Benjamin, religious theology and other varioustheoretical resources. His view on tragedy is established on the basis of its ethicaland political ideas. In his view on tragedy, the cultural value of tragedy was nolonger a kind of worship about special and noble art, but a focus on ethics andpolitical value of suffering. His tragedy view reflected new tragic connotation,opened up new value and function in the modern social cultural context, and made arevelation for tragedy art theory, and it also given a new faith power of revolution.This article explores Eagleton’s ethics political view on tragedy, investigatesEagleton’s innovation and construction of tragedy theory on modern social andcultural contexts. This article research Eagleton’s ideas on tragedy from three aspects:the objective and logic of Eagleton’s tragedy view, the new tragedy connotationwhich based on modern society and the value and limitation about Eagleton’s idea oftragedy. This paper argues that Eagleton’s modern concept of tragedy is an importantnew cognition about tragedy after entering modern society, and his achievements onthe field of tragedy theory is worthy of pay attention.
