Eagleton's view of tragedy inherits Marx and Williams'thoughts on tragedy, which regards highly of this literary genre. His view of tragedy is based on physical pain in a way of deconstruction to illustrate various problems in tragedy, looking for the revolutionary elements present in the tragedy to transform the traditional tragedy theory, breaking the shackles of the traditional concept of tragedy, going beyond the theory that tragedy that only can occur in a small number of nobility. By doing this, he constructs his own unique view of universal theory of tragedy.Eagleton's view of tragedy firstly illustrates in his description of the tragic conflict. In his view, the tragedy of conflict tragic emerges in the split of body and soul, which is present in every human body and provokes revolutionary and liberation forces. On this basis, Eagleton's analysis on the anatomic nature of the tragedy opens of a new path of tragedy study.Eagleton's view of tragedy secondly illustrates in his description of the tragic hero. Eagleton deconstructs tragic hero who appears in the literary history in the time order, stripping the relevant elements from them, building a theory of'scapegoat'as a new type tragic figure. In his view,'scapegoat'bears the modern hardships and is the universal significance of the tragedy characters.
