‘Qi’is a concept originated from the ancient Chinese philosophy. It is first seen in thephilosophy works of early Qin. The Qi in ancient Chinese philosophy means the origin of nature, aunique concept that summarizes the creation of the universe. Although it is abstract, it is the basicof life. After Wei Jin North and South Dynasty, Qi is not only a philosophical concept, but also anaesthetical one. Thus, Qi is a internal dynamic in the beauty of music. Qi in Erhu performance isthe Qi of life and art; in the Erhu performance, the Qi elicits the Yun. Erhu comes into life with Qi,and becomes elegant with Yun. When performing, adept skill and familiarity to the piece isessential. In the mean time, Qi plays a very important part as well. It is the performer’s breath andmind that proceed the flow of music. It is true that cooperation of both hands, techniques, tone ofsound are crucial. But it is far from a truly good music if the performer only concentrates on thislevel. If the performer only follows finger and bow positions on the score, without the properbreath in coordination, then his performance is just a flow of notes not music, no matter howskilled the technique is. Because the ultimate goal is to express better music, no matter whattechnique the performer uses or what kinds of tone the notes are. Everything is in the service ofsoul of music. In another words, the core value, the soul is to express the spirit of music, which isYun.This paper discussed the important role of Qi in music performance. Moreover, the relationship ofQi (breath) and music sentence, whole piece and Yun. It is essential that the performer could learnto master Qi in music expression. Only in this could a performer understand the soul of the music. This paper studied of relationship between mind/breathe and score marks, the music image, andthe performer status, and the study of Qi in music performance. Thus the unified state of ‘emotion, technique, and heart’ could be achieved by the coordination of ‘breathe’ in both performer andmusic piece. From the standpoint of ancient Chinese philosophy, and analyzing from the aesthetic‘Qi’, this paper talked about the important role of proper breathing in Erhu performing. Thusenhancing Erhu performance to the highest aesthetical standard and perfect state of art.
