Summit diplomacy is one of the main forms of diplomatic developments in the world today, and also a specific reflection of the globalization in the diplomatic field. Now many issues between nations need instant results for the world situation is rapidly changing. So it would have been a delay in the country’s development and make their own in international diplomacy in a passive position to decide each of matters in full accordance with the official domestic legislative procedures. Contacts continue to deepen between China and the United States in recent years, and international issues the two countries need to face together is gradually increasing. In this case, China has actively participated in summit diplomacy activities, which not only makes China’s diplomatic activities in sync with the development of the world, but also makes China’s diplomacy entered a new field. Summit diplomacy enriches and expands the content and form of diplomatic activities. It has a big difference on bilateral relations of the increasingly frequent Sino-US summit diplomacy activities in recent years. Since China and the United States restored the diplomatic relations, the two heads of state have smoothly solved questions facing together through this simple way of summit diplomacy in several times, which has provided a lot of opportunity for the two sides to conduct effective exchanges and cooperation yet. No longer was disputes and friction between the two countries irreconcilable in the early days. Summit diplomacy is important because it offers a more interactive mechanism for developments of each other. The main purpose of this paper is to discourse role of summit diplomacy between China and the United States, as well as the impact on bilateral relations in order to provide theoretical support for the exchanges between the two leaders in the future. With the current international situation undergoing profound changes, human beings are facing many common problems. China and the United States increasingly dependent on each other, on one hand, Sino-US relations are developing rapidly, on the other hand, series of problems faced before will create new opinions and division in the new pattern of the world. The United States is the world’s only superpower, and China’s international influence is also growing. The meeting between the two heads not only has a profound impact on the two countries, but also is concerned by the world. Summit diplomacy of this article is of great significance, whether it is to China and the United States or other countries or organizations in the world. This article sums up the meaning of summit diplomacy through full reading of historical documents, and d on this base points out its functions, features and affecting factors, and then makes a summary of summit diplomacy’s impact on the China-US relations. Then the author describes in detail events of the most representative in the course of development of Sino-US summit diplomacy in accordance with the historical sequence, including the Nixon’s visit to China, Clinton’s visit as well as Obama and Hu Jintao’s visits. These events seemingly separated by several years have a certain logic and necessity. After continuous efforts of successive leaders, the Sino-US relations show a good trend, summit diplomacy between the two countries has been more and more productive. With a more accurate grasp of summit diplomacy in history between China and the United States, this article discusses the impact of summit diplomacy on the China-US relations, including both bilateral summit diplomacy and multi-national summit diplomacy. In the end, the paper expounds the prospects of Sino-US diplomacy, and then draws conclusion that summit diplomacy between the two countries will achieve further development.
