Summit diplomacy is an important form of diplomacy when a country involves itself in international businesses. It is as well an inevitable subject in the study of modern diplomacy. Based on the summit diplomacy between China and DPRK since 1994, this article tries to survey the diplomacy of the leaders of both countries during this time and analyze the important role played by summit diplomacy in the change and development of the two countries'relationship.Chapter 1 includes a theoretical investigation of the history, applicable conditions and various styles of summit diplomacy and conducts a statistical research of Sino-DPRK summit diplomacy since 1994 with an analysis of its development tendencies and structural changes. Based on the background study of the challenges faced by the two countries before and after the death of DPRK leader Kim Il-sung in 1994, Chapter 2 studies the summit diplomacy during the transition of the power of DPRK in terms of mourning, mutual visits, communications and free assistance, trying to analyze the characteristics and emphasis of Sino-DPRK summit diplomacy. Chapter 3 starts with a brief description of the change of DPRK diplomacy since Kim Jong-il officially took power and intensively analyzes both countries'summit diplomacy since 1998 on the following two aspects:(1) The historical contributions made by the six visits and meetings between both heads of states to the new development of bilateral relationship in the new century, (2) Historical perspectives demonstrated in summit diplomacy featuring remembering traditional friendship, promoting various cooperation, highlighting humanitarian care and seeking peace and stability. This Chapter also further reveals the various forms and profound meanings of Sin-DPRK summit diplomacy. The article finally draws a conclusion by analyzing the symbolic, realistic and theoretical meanings of Sino-DPRK summit diplomacy and gives out some implications of its roles in furthering developing Sino-DPRK relations.
