With the acceleration of globalization and the integration of global culture, awide range of change is occurring in every field of society. To cater to the socialchange and response to the modernism, the form of traditional religious and the waythat to participate in social life are also imperceptibly in the transformation. Some ofthe traditional religion regenerate with the form of the religious revival andreconstruction, and there are also some new religion form also arises at the right time,including a civil religion that be controversial. This is one of most importantquasi-religious form in the20th century, which is the result of nation-state socialsystem, and especially in the modern nation-state, such countries become the core ofcitizenship and the basis of national culture spirit under the trend of substitute for thetraditional religious system.The cultural integration is necessary in modern society without a doubt. As akind of universal values, the broad concept of civil religion may be desirable.However, because of the diversity of social and cultural, though it intends to realizethe republic and aims to defend the social, the formation of a unified civil religionwithin and across nation-state may be envisaged and just in the assumptions. Facingwith the dilemma of multicultural,to achieve this great goal it needs the joint efforts ofthe whole human society, even like the Durkheim or Ji Zhe such as scholars, wholook forward to the grand ideal with the attitude of optimism.Based on the reality of social and theory above, this study organizes the natureand meaning of civil religion in reviewing the existing research more clearly. Tracingto the source, a depth analysis to the concept which contains two aspects is made andthe sanctity and its historical foundation is clarified. It explores the reality andpossibility in modern society, from the construction of civil religion in the startingpoint of this idea.
