An English teachers’belief of teaching describes the way in which he or she views English teaching. It affects teachers’understanding, judgement and adoption of teaching strategies, and this will, in turn, influence the realization of effective teaching and education of teachers. The research focuses on the actual state of English teachers’belief and its impact on teaching effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to provide advice for teachers’self-reflection and teaching improvement which to gain teacher professional development and the enhancement of teaching quality.The research adopted the qualitative research and quantitative research. On the one hand, the research adopting questionnaire to investigate the actual state of 173 English teachers’belief in twenty schools from Beijing, Zhejiang, Hunan and Guangdong. On the other hand, the research adopting interview of six English teachers from Beijing and Hunan and observation of their classes.The major findings of this study as follows:1.The belief of most English teachers is progressive.2. There is no significant difference in teachers’belief between different age, age of teaching, educational experience and academic title.3. The score of English teachers’belief in general rural schools is less than teachers in urban schools while teachers’belief in province key schools got the highest score.4. Teaching aims of English teachers with conservative orientation focused on knowledge base while aims of teachers with progressive orientation focused on various aspects.5. The belief of English teachers has effect on their teaching effectiveness.6. There are differences between teachers’belief and their behaviors while the execution degree of belief in each dimension is different.7. There are differences between the teachers’belief orientation overall and the belief orientation of each dimensions.8. It lacks concern on effective learning for English teachers.The thesis probes into the importance of English teachers’beliefs in teaching effectiveness, analyzes the key period in the English teachers’development, and proposes some important implication in English teachers’education and teachers’development.
