In China, self-driving tourism has rised in1990s and it has developed gradually withthe increase of private cars, the development of living standard, the change of opinions forleisure time and the improvement of the road network. Since2008, self-driving tourism hasshown explosive growth and become mature slowly. By virtue of the unique geographicallocation and resource advantages, in recent years, Self-driving tourism has developedquickly in Xinjiang,especially in Urumqi, the capital of Xinjiang and market potential huge.From two aspects, theory and practice, this article is trying to do some researches anddiscussions about the behavioral characteristics of the self-driving tourists in Urumqi. Viareferring to relevant information, making questionnaires, doing field interviews andcombinating the qualitative and quantitative methods together, the article studies thebehavioral characteristics of self-driving tourists in Urumqi. The following conclusions canbe made:(1)In Urumqi, self-driving tourists are composed of the people who are in their heydaysand have higher education and higher income. Their consuming power is relatively strong.(2)In Urumqi, the self-driving tourists give priority to the people who have private cars.There are more individual travellers. The characteristic of travelling-in-vacation is obvious.Self-driving tourists often achieve self-service travel together with friends and relatives.(3)Most destinations of self-driving are close tourist markets. Travel within Xinjiang isthe large spatial extent of self-driving tourism market.(4)In Urumqi, the moving trajectory of self-driving tourists marginalizes obiously. Thetourist spots are more concentrated and tend to a higher-level attractions visit. Thedevelopment of tourism products for self-driving should be strengthened.(5)In addition to the recommendation from friends and family, the network is the mainaccess to information for self-driving tourists currently. The intervention from travelagencies and car-rental companies to the market is not enough.(6)Security has become a primary factor to consider for car owners in Urumqi. Thecorresponding services are inadequate. The development of the self-driving tourismmarket is in its infancy. The products’ development is in the trial stage. And themarketization level is not high.The countermeasures to the development of self-driving tourism in Urumqi: Strengthen themarketing; Pay similar attention to network and diversity when talking about the marketingchannels;Subdivide the market of tourist-source; Strengthen the resource integration and regional cooperation; Excavate tourism-product-line for self-driving;Improve the relatedinfrastructures; Establish the rescue-security system; Reinforce the publicity and education;Strengthen the cultivation and the standardizaton of the market.
