With the New English Curriculum Standards of senior high school promulgated,most teachers transfer their teaching focus into reading teaching. In the past few years,teachers only concentrate on the explanation of vocabulary, grammar and sentence,spending much time on the translation of complex paragraphs. They cannot treat thestudents to understand the text from discourse perspective and guide them to analyzethe logical relationships between sentences. Therefore, when students read the textthey often feel frustrated with one unfamiliar word or complicated sentences, whichresults in too much time spent in dealing with the complex sentences and grammars.The accuracy and proficiency of reading comprehension cannot be improved. Inrecent years, with the teaching focus transferred into the application of Pragmatics toreading comprehension, Liaoning, Ningxia and other provinces adopt new policies toconfront with the reform of College Entrance Examination in English. The reforminvolves cloze reading with five sentences missing in the text and choosing theappropriate choices from seven sentences which tests the students’ability of graspingmain information and predicating the development of sentences from the context.Therefore, cohesion and coherence theory should be paid attention toprocessing cloze reading. It is necessary for the students to acquire certain knowledgeof discourse to improve reading speed and accuracy. Cohesion and coherence theoryis the critical part of discourse analysis and influence students’reading skills. In orderto achieve the best result of reading, the author adds cohesion and coherence knowledge in cloze reading to enable the students to grasp the main idea of text froma discourse perspective, make clear of the development of text and predict themeaning of context and thus to improve students’reading ability.The participants of this study are selected from GaoWan senior high school.The students are all in Grade Two. Through the empirical research, the author hopesto prove that cohesion and coherence theory can improve students’cloze readingability, especially benefit them on processing reading skills and guessing words ability.According to the experiment results, the author puts forward some suggestions toEnglish reading teaching.
