The informationization of social life and economical globalization make English increasingly important. English, as one of most important information media, has become the most widely used language in every field of human life. Because of the reform and opening-up, the scale of English teaching in our country has been expanding. English teaching has made great achievements. However, the current situation of English teaching can't meet the needs of economic construction and social development. As we know, most students have learned English for many years, but they are still unable to use language correctly and appropriately.From Junior to Senior high school, many students who have learned English for a few years have grasped the grammar knowledge and certain amount of vocabularies required by syllabus, but they can't write out an appropriate letter. Although there are not so many new words in a passage, they can't quickly grasp the general idea after reading and then make an immediate reaction. So we need to improve our teaching method. I think it is a great regret that we pay too much attention to the teaching of vocabulary and neglect passage production and process of reading comprehension, which has great influences on students' learning effect and the ability of reading comprehension.Cohesion and coherence theory is an important theory of text analysis. According to the theory of text analysis, text analysis should go beyond the sentence level; text analysis should analyze the role that the sentence plays in the text and analyze how sentences are linked together to form a unified meaning. This paper, based on cohesion and coherence theory, discusses how to apply the cohesion and coherence theory to English reading teaching. The purpose of this study is to better English reading teaching and improves students' reading comprehension ability.This thesis consists of four parts. The first part is Introduction, introducing the objectives and the main contents of this study. The second part is literature review and the theoretical framework of this study, summarizing the theory of cohesion and coherence. The third part, the main body, explains the application of cohesion and coherence theory to Senior High School English reading teaching in greater detail.Specifically this part is illustrated from four aspects, that is, lexical relationship, logical connector, grammatical relationship and context. The last part concludes this paper and points out that we need to apply the cohesion and coherence theory to English reading teaching in order to improve our English teaching and develop the students' reading ability...
