In recent years, CBI has been widely used in an extensive number of teaching scenes all over the world in a variety of models. Numerous empirical studies exist to demonstrate the efficacy of CBI in developing the learners’ language proficiency in college English, especially in business, medicine, tourism and so on. However, compared with other articles, the thesis on applying CBI in middle and primary schools is much less. Therefore, the author hold that it is better to improve the students’ability of English reading, which is connected CBI with students’ English reading in senior high school, and it can be catered to the new curriculum reform during the21st century.The purpose of this study is to explore the efficacy of content-based instruction (CBI) in influencing learners’ reading ability of English in the senior school context. And it is based on Cooperative Leaming Theory, Constructivism, and the Theory of Cognitive and Educational Psychology. The subjects are66students from two classes (each having33participants) in Grade One of Kaifeng No.4Middle School, Henan Province. The subjects are at the similar age, and they have the similar educational backgrounds. The experimental class was applied the principles of CBI into the reading teaching, meanwhile the control class was kept the former way of teaching. The experimental teaching program lasted for one semester, commencing in September and ending in December,2011. The questionnaire is conducted before the experiment which is got the interesting and helpful topics for students in the experimental class, and another reason is to make sure that there are no experiments had been tested to these subjects. And the interviews were designed to find whether the students were interested in the principles of CBI that used in English class, and the effect on the students’reading ability. Above all, the data of pretest and posttest were analysis by SPSS to determine whether the students’ reading ability was improved through the principles of CBI.Multivariate statistical analysis was conducted to deal with the data and the materials which were collected by the author. It was found that:Under the learning environment which is English as a foreign language, the principles of CBI are not only applied to the senior English reading course effectively, but also are improved the students’ reading ability. When some conditions (e.g. the teacher’s qualifications and learners’ pressure for entering the senior-high-school) are satisfied in the senior English reading course, the CBI approach can be displayed its advantages in helping the students in primary and high schools to develop their English reading ability.
