Improving students' reading abilities is one of the objectives of senior English teaching. Reading is an essential ability to learn a language. It is the foundation of mastering a language as well as a main tool to obtain information. The English Syllabus for high school points out that our country has promulgated definitely emphasizes the importance of reading in English teaching. The new curriculum standard demands: high school English teaching should make the students'basic knowledge stronger and develop their four basic language abilities of listening,speaking,reading and writing,laying emphasis on the training of their reading ability,so that they can have a solid foundation for the further studies and for the use of English in the future. And if the students want to pass the entrance examination to college successfully, they must improve their understanding ability, because the total marks of the examination is 150, but reading comprehension covers 40 marks. There is another reason: with China entering WTO,more and more people may have plenty of opportunities to read books,newspapers and magazines written in English.Scholars at home and abroad have made many researches on English reading teaching and have published many related articles and works. In the light of all these researches and achievements that have been achieved, by the questionnaire investigation,which was developed on the basis of reading strategies, the author finds that a low percentage of senior students use reading strategies in reading activities, a lower percentage of ineffective readers use reading strategies,Compared with effective readers; the results also show that reading strategy is almost neglected altogether. As the old saying goes,to give a man a fish,he can only eat for a short time. So this thesis tries to probe this hypothesis: Whether the Strategies-based Instruction (SBI) can improve high school students' EFL reading efficiency? The thesis also designs an experiment to prove it.There are five parts in this thesis:Part one: The importance and the background of the present studyPart two: Problems are found by questionnaire investigation .The hypothesis provided to solve the problems is designed to prove it.Part three: Literature ReviewPart four: It is about the experiment.
