The study of English writing has long been considered as one of the most basic elementsof learning English. The teaching of writing inevitably becomes the focus of English teaching.In2003, China promulgated the "New English Curriculum Standards (trial version)", whichmade clear requirements on the learning and teaching of English writing. The new curriculumclaims on methods of teaching and learning. In the process of new curriculum’simplementation, have the senior English teachers changed their ways of teaching Englishwriting? Have they taught according to the new curriculum? Have the senior students changedtheir style of learning English writing in the face of new requirements on writing? The thesisresearches the present situations of English writing teaching based on the above questions.The thesis carries out a detailed study on English writing teaching through questionnaires.The participants of the study are senior English teachers and students. The study includes thefollowing three aspects: the general awarenesses and attitudes of senior English teacherstowards English writing teaching; the main methods of English writing teaching in seniorhigh school; the students’ attitudes toward English writing. The thesis not only investigatesthe present situations of writing teaching but also researches on the writing of students fromdiffirent levels to feedback the teachers’ problems. The author finds the main problems in theEnglish writing teaching through the survey. The problems are as follows: teachers pay notenough attention to the teaching of writing; the teachers have failed to inspire students’interest in writing; inefficient class hours prevent the teachers from well fullfilling theteaching program; the way of evluation is too simple.To solve these problems and teacheffectively, the author proposes some teaching suggestions: the teachers should pay moreattention to writing teaching; draw the students’ attention to the learning of English writing;try best to fulfill the teaching program; let the students evaluate themselves.
