An Investigation And Analysis Of Reticence In Senior High School English Class

Students’ reticence in English class is bad for both students’ learning and teachers’teaching. In order to have a deep understanding of the senior high students’ reticence inEnglish class, the author in the thesis aims at investigating and studying three mainissues.1.Whether students’ reticence is a common phenomenon in senior high schoolEnglish class.2.What are the main reasons for students’ reticence.3.Based on the mainreasons how to deal with students’ reticence.To get the answers of the above three questions, the author has carried out aquestionnaire investigation among students, interviewed several English teachers andsome students, and recorded students’ condition in their English classes.First of all, students’ silence is indeed a very common phenomenon in junior highschool English class, and this phenomenon has a very close relationship with students’English level. What’s more, most of students hold a negative attitude to students’reticence, and they believe it has a bad influence on their English study. Besides, mostof students prefer to have their English class in an active and lively atmosphere.Why students are reluctant to speak English in their class? The author summarizesseven main reasons such as students’ low level in English, less confidence, sleepy stateor bad mood in English class, psychology of following suit, teachers’ boring questions,stiff teaching method and students’ puzzling about teachers’ English-to-Englishteaching.Finally, based on each main reason, the author brings up the solutions. Cater for thediversity of classes; create a relaxed, lively, happy and harmonious class atmosphere;pay more attention to students’ emotion; develop a good relationship with students; andimprove teachers’ comprehensive quality continually.
