In English language teaching, the importance of writing is obvious. Currently, the senior three students have already acquired some basic language knowledge and abilities, but the students’ writing is not satisfactory, and should be improved necessarily. Therefore, in order to make teaching more targeted and effective, the author thinks it is quite necessary to understand students’ writing difficulties and errors occurred in the compositions; besides, teachers should apply the modern linguistics theories to studying the errors and find some suitable strategies to improve students’ writing ability,The author of this thesis has analyzed and classified the common errors in a corpus of240essays written by125middle school students in two classes who have studied in Grade3in No.1Middle School of Changsha County. These essays are mainly the students’exercise work or test papers, whose topics cover school life, environment, social life, comments on social phenomena and a description of the figures, etc. The author’s study results indicate that, in English writing, the major errors made by students are grammar errors and Chinglish; The two main causes for errors are interlingual errors and intralingual errors, Interlingual errors are mainly caused by the mother tongue of the negative transfer; predominantly causing intralingual errors is because learners acquire limited, incomplete knowledge of the target language in the English learning process, which launched the deviation from the learned rules. The generalization in the target language rules, limits on target language rules neglect or some of the rules of incorrect use may cause intralingual errors.In order to reduce the writing errors in the students writing, and promote the English writing, the author proposes4teaching strategies to English writing teaching, namely,1) Strengthening Grammar teaching;2) Comparing Chinese with English;3) Integrating Reading into Writing;4) the Imitating Writing. These measures and approaches have some positive effects in the practical English writing teaching.
