English listening is one of the key factors to demonstrate a learner’s language level. Developing the ability of English listening is very important in different stages of English teaching. And nowadays listening plays a very important part in all kinds of English tests. The proficiency of listening is closely connected with the students’ whole English score. So teachers are required to train students to improve their listening ability and perform better in English listening tests.The traditional method is that teachers play the tape and the students do some exercises while or after listening. However, when it comes to the question such as how to grasp the specific information while listening, even the senior high school students who have learned English for many years do not have a clear idea. During this teaching process, students are not trained to use any strategies or given any knowledge of strategies to guide their listening process.Based on this, a study about the application of predicting strategies in senior high school English listening is to be introduced.The purpose of this study is to investigate the instruction of listening predicting strategies in the senior high school. The paper tests the hypothesis that if teachers instruct the listening predicting strategies and try to give the students some necessary training during the listening activities, their listening ability and performance in English listening test will be improved, and students will have less difficulty in doing the tests to some extent and become more interested and confident in English listening. Meanwhile, the author hopes that the students’awareness of using the listening predicting strategies can be strengthened.Therefore, an experiment was earried out between two parallel classes. Tests, questionnaires and interviews were used and all the data were collected and analyzed. Through the one-semester experiment, the author carried out the qualitative and quantitative analysis. The results revealed that the achievement of the students in English listening in the experimental class was better than that of the students in the corresponding class.It has proved that the application of the listening predicting strategies in senior high school can help to enhance the students’English listening ability and their English listening score.
