Formative assessment is a series of assessment of students’ learning, so that it can supplysome feedback information,which will improve teaching and learning activities. Most currentresearches of formative assessment on English teaching are theoretical researches rather thanempirical ones. From the limited literature materials, it is easy to know: the implementation offormative assessment doesn’t fully accord with the theory. The dissertation aims to survey thecurrent situation of formative assessment of senior high school English teaching and learning,which will supply enough materials and reference for future researches.In order to survey the current situation of formative assessment of high school Englishteaching and learning and what the students’ attitude is, interview and questionnaire are usedas research tools. Teachers and students from Yantai No.1Middle School are the objects of theresearch. From the data analysis of the interview and questionnaire, we know: in currentsenior high school English teaching and learning, teachers play the most important role inassessment; various ways of formative assessment haven’t been widely and well implemented;assessment contents are not various. Besides, there’re lots of factors affecting theimplementation, such as heavy teaching assignment, college entrance examination andstudents’ psychological factors. As for this, the dissertation gives some suggestions onassessment theories, teachers’ role in assessment, and techniques of using assessment waysand so on, so as to draw attention of English teachers, schools and society.
