General College Entrance Examination is conducted for the selection of college students. The reform of the National Matriculation English Test (NMET) is one of the most dynamic ones in all subjects, NMET for Hunan candidates in particular. In recent years, with the new curriculum ideas continuing to permeate, Hunan NMET has emerged a group of new NMET types.2010Hunan NMET descriptions says the reform of the cloze test in2010Hunan NMET paper is dynamic. The change would be appropriate to adjust the amount and weight of cloze test, and to improve the ratio of the context test and comprehensive test. According to Hunan’s education development and needs, setters of Hunan NMET paper have made useful attempts to Hunan NMET in the guidance of the advanced Bachman’s communicative approach and the new national curriculum standards. They are the first to divide the20traditional multiple-choice cloze test into cloze1(12traditional multiple-choice cloze) and cloze2(8rational cloze). Because the reform of the NMET cloze test is new and experimental, we need to analyze it and discover its advantages and disadvantages. Thus, this research aims to make a comparative study between2009Hunan NMET cloze test (Test A)and the cloze test in the2010Hunan NMET descriptions (Test B), using scientific quantitative and qualitative analytical tools.The author focuses on the following five research questions:1. Are there any change to the difficulty of pre-reform cloze test and post-reform cloze test?2. Are there any change to the degree of differentiation of pre-reform cloze test and post-reform cloze test?3. Are there any change to the reliability of pre-reform cloze test and post-reform cloze test?4. Are there any change to the validity of pre-reform cloze test and post-reform cloze test?5. What attitudes do Hunan candidates and first-line teachers hold towards pre-reform cloze test and post-reform cloze test? To solve the five questions, the author carried out an empirical study.40Grade12students from Class117in NO.10Senior Middle School in Changsha county and their English teacher participated in the cloze tests and cloze questionnaires. Then, the author analyzed the results of cloze tests, the cloze questionnaires and interviews.According to the analysis, compared to the traditional pre-reform cloze test, the post-reform cloze test for Hunan candidates has greater difficulty, higher degree of differentiation, higher reliability and validity. Although the students and their English teacher interviewed mentioned that from another angle the post-reform cloze test increased the cost of test-setting and the intensity of grading, they all agreed that the new post-reform cloze test is better than the traditional pre-reform cloze test.This thesis aims to study the effectiveness of2010Hunan NMET cloze test and its scientific testing methods. And the author hopes to start a discussion on the post-reform cloze test for Hunan candidates under the guidance of New National Curriculum Standards (NNCS), so as to achieve the purpose of selecting the most capable students for universities and colleges, implementing the quality education, promoting the new curriculum reform and the reform of English teaching in secondary schools, continuously improving the NMET pattern in Hunan Province and promoting the reform of Hunan NMET.
