Rural economic system has changed dramatically after China’s reform and openingup, which improved people’s living standard to a great extent. Due to high satisfaction ofmaterial life, villagers began to pay more attention to their spiritual life; therefore, a widerange of cultural organizations boomed. The elder association of Korean Chinese thatfounded during this period has become typical folk cultural organization and the focus ofpsychological culture among senior citizens. It is constituted by elder Korean inhabitantsvoluntarily and spread in every village. Moreover, it has such rich cultural connotationthat it not only provides many opportunities to develope communication between Koreanpeople and the Han ethnic, but also plays a pivotal role in the complement andreconstruction of rural culture.In the following essay, the current situation of the elder association in Baogang as atypical case will be analyzed from different perspectives, such as sociology, anthropology,ethnology and psychology to name but a few, added with the field study and literaturematerial. It tends to reveal the cultural life of rural elderly people as marginal groups andcultural restruction when rural life permeates with cultural association mutually in theregion.This paper comprises the introduction, the main body which consists of fivechapters and conclusion.The introduction illustrates the purpose and significant of choosing the topic, thecurrent situation of this subject, the source and research methods, theoretical innovationin this paper and shortcomings.The first chapter is about the general condition of Shenyang Baogang whoseenvironment is introduced in the chapter geographically and temporally. Meanwhile, italso demonstrates the daily lives of local senior citizens in order to provide a betterunderstanding to the background of elderly association production.The second chapter provides an overview of the elder association in Baogang,mainly divided into three parts: firstly, it introduces the development history of folkorganizations in the rural area in China; secondly, it discusses the general background of the elder association in Baogang Korean village, including personnel structure, theorganizational structure, and the sources of funds, facilities, main activities; finally, itintroduces five characteristics of the association.The third chapter analyzes the present status of elder association in the area andcauses of its production. The elder association is an indispensable part locally and it isextremely popular among old people. In my point of view, its production is rooted inChina’s economy system reform and rural livelihoods change, as well as the requirementof old people towards spiritual life in their later years.Chapter four illustrates the social function of the elder association as a CulturalPhenomenon in old people’s daily life in the modern country and reflection of their needson spiritual life.Chapter five is the most crucial part of the essay. It analyzes the cultural significanceof elder association in accordance with functionalism. With a background ofmodernization, the change of rural social life structure leads to the cultural breakage ofold people, which is resolved by the elderly association as a kind of cultural harmoniousmeans. Furthermore, elder association also combines two ethnic groups whose culturehas penetrated mutually. Finally, it interprets two aspects of the elder association cultureby using two specific activities.The elder association has a special significance as modernization process of ruralcultural strategy and a universal meaning as well. It used to be a common folkorgnization but it also has a realistic meaning to most old people in countryside with amodern social pattern. Thus, it has been applied extensively in the rural society andcommunity. The conclusion explains the value and significance of elder association.
