As one of the most important parts in the process of language teaching, cultural teaching has been attached increasingly significance by lots of scholars and English teachers. Great progress has also been achieved in researches related to cultural teaching. However, looking through the relevant articles, we can find that a majority of these achievements are just focused on target culture. Being an essential part of cultural teaching, however, the English learners’native culture has been ignored, which results in students’poor ability of expressing Chinese culture and leads to the phenomenon called Culture Aphasia. The existence of Culture Aphasia greatly impedes the development of students’intercultural communicative competence. Since intercultural communication is a kind of two-way activity, which means that the native culture should also be included in the cultural teaching, English teaching should not only pay attention to western culture. Having a better understanding of Chinese culture and transmitting it to the outside world has also been an important task of English teaching. Now it has been a new significant issue in the research of English language teaching about how to keep a balance in target language culture as well as Chinese culture so as to realize effective intercultural communication. The thesis firstly introduces the relevant theoretical background and then reviews the historical evolvement of culture teaching both at home and aboard. An extensive literature review of relevant concepts and theories are presented from the perspective of cultural comparison, intercultural communication, cognitive schema, input and output hypothesis in order to lay the theoretical foundation for the rest of the thesis. Building on that and using questionnaires, the author carries out a survey on the current situation of culture teaching among160students and30English teachers in three senior high schools. The result of survey shows that the students’and teachers’mastery of Chinese culture as well as ability to present it in English is far from satisfaction. The phenomenon of Chinese cultural aphasia do exists in serious degree. The reasons include the teachers’ignorance of Chinese culture, the absence of Chinese culture expressed in English in our textbooks and deficiency in effective checking and measuring system. At last, based on the result, the author puts forward some relevant teaching inspirations, with the hope that senior high school teachers can get some reference suggestions.
