A Study On Teaching Chinese Culture In TEFL In The Middle School

Culture teaching plays a very important role in TEFL in China, which is widely acknowledged by English teaching circle. Cultivating students' intercultural communicative competence has become one of the main objectives of TEFL these years. In the thesis, with the viewpoint of the intercultural communication, the author points out that the ultimate objective of English learning is obtaining the communicate competence. An intercultural communication can never be real if the conversation is only discussed on one-side culture. In order to look for the opportunities to communicate and compare with other culture, language learners should understand their own culture firstly.Most students face embarrassment when they encounter intercultural communication. For today's students, they just learn pure western texts and accept western ideological compiled in their textbooks. On the other hand, teachers of EFL usually focus on the Western culture, ignoring the learners' own culture. This one-side flow of the target culture misleads the English language learners who would not take their home culture as a necessary communicative condition into consideration. Since students don't know how to express their own culture in English, the intercultural communication proved to be low efficiency and meaningless.With ten-year experience of English teaching, the author of the thesis presents a proposal that Chinese culture teaching should be emphasized in TEFL classroom. The curricula of culture teaching need to be reviewed and reformulated in order to have new courses of teaching Chinese culture in English.In the thesis, the review on the studies of culture teaching in the west and China shows the necessity of combining language and culture teaching in TEFL, the theories of the domestic scholars also indicate the importance of teaching Chinese culture in TEFL at present.
