With the development of competitive basketball, substitutes play more importantrole and spend more time than before on court. The Chinese team have to catch up withthe latest pace of world basketball on the base of its own current situation if it wants toachieve more in the Post-Yao Ming Era. Through the method of literature and videoinvestigation, the paper analyses developmental trend and current situation ofsubstitutes in the world basketball competition. The contribution rate of substitutes in the most of European or American elitebasketball teams is close to, sometimes even more than the main players. The team iswell consisted of the substitutes and the main players, therefore the match doesn’t justrely on a few main players. The number of players playing on court always cannot beless than8.what`s the most important, the main players may not all play in the game sothat the team has a variety of choices to arrange lineup and substitutes often playing inthe game has the ability to play first. For example,American substitutes’ match time,participant rate and contribution rate are more than their rivals in the US-Span, US-Lithuania matches, which suggests that American substitutes have better competitive ability.3. In2008Olympic Game and2010FIBA World Championship, the contributionrate of Chinese substitutes has obvious difference from that of world elite teams in:（l）that Chinese substitutes have less match time of30-44minutes.（2） that the Chineseteam have less substitutes on court of4-5persons.（3）that Chinese substitutes havelower contribution rate.4. This claimsthat there is bigger contradiction in Chinese substitutes’ competitive ability.The coach is suggested to draw lessons from the advanced experience of the world,and to change the traditional idea that “the first player to make the world”. The coachshould give more opportunity to the bench players according to the specificcircumstance, and let them exercise more to play their own expertise. What’s more, thecoach needs to let bench players play games with the help of leading players on thebasis of the state of players and the particular cases. Through this way, bench playerscan increase their experience about great competitions and become more familiar withthe knowledge about the whole team’s tactics. Besides, they can also enhance theircompetition ability.
