English listening, one of the input skills,is the basis and prerequisite of languagelearning and language output. There is no doubt that it plays a crucial part in Englishlearning. The book named New English curriculum standards calls for new demandsin senior high school listening comprehension. However, English listening is still thedifficult point for senior high school students. Thus studies on English listening havebecome the focus of many researchers worldwide.Input hypothesis brings enlightenment to the listening comprehension. Krashenpointed that language input must be understood by learners, which is comprehensiveinput. Also, he further stressed that the pattern of input should be “i+1”, in which “i”refers to learners’current language competence and “1” refers to what to be gained bythe learner with the help of current language competence. As for listeningcomprehension, the prefabricated chunks with their fixed structures and meaning, easy to be understood by listeners, serve as “1” in listening comprehension, and thismakes it easy for listeners to understand the listening comprehension better.Meanwhile, what George Miller pointed testifies the application of prefabricatedchunks in listening, and he mentioned that the capacity of people’s short-termmemory is7+/-2chunks. As the process of listening comprehension is fast, so theinformation listeners can store in their short-term memory is less. But according to thememory theory, if we consider prefabricated chunks as unit of memory while listening,we can increase the capacity of short-term memory. This paper, based on the input hypothesis and memory theory, aims to find outthe effectiveness of prefabricated chunks teaching on listening teaching and learningfrom the influences of prefabricated chunks teaching on enlarging the size ofvocabulary, expanding the short-term memory capacity and enhancing the ability ofpredicting, so as to gain some implications to listening teaching. This paper contains mainly five parts. The first part is introduction, whichpresents the background and the significance of the paper. Following the first part isliterature review, it summarizes the different definitions, classifications, functions ofprefabricated chunks, and this part will further deplores the nature of listening and thefactors affecting listening, also it will review the functions prefabricated chunks playin the listening comprehension, the theoretical foundations of the paper and thestudies related at home and abroad. Part Three is the main part of this paper, it is mainly about the introduction of the research methodology and research procedures, including the objectives, subjects and the instruments employed as well as theprocedure of the experiment. There are two classes concerned, one of which isExperimental Class and the other is Controlled Class. At the same time, theexperiment will be conducted for four months, also questionnaires and interviews willbe carried out to get data. Part Four also plays a very important role. It will collectdata and carefully analyze them. Last part will make a conclusion of the wholeresearch and put forward some implications and limitations, hoping to improve thelistening comprehension teaching.
