Pharmaceutical English is an important basic course for pharmacy majors in secondaryvocational school. It is a course being characterized by being practical, professional andapplicable. Its teaching aims are cultivating students’ vocational skills and quality, far beyondthe only teaching of basic grammar and vocabulary. This study is targeted at the majorproblems of the traditional teaching of Pharmaceutical English, under which many studentsshow little interest in learning Pharmaceutical English and the teaching efficiency is poor.This study attempts to apply the TBLT (Task-based Language Teaching) to the teaching ofPharmaceutical English, trying to probe whether this application, compared with thetraditional teaching, can better improve students’ English achievements, stimulate theirlearning interest and further enhance their learning antinomy.The author chose two natural classes of pharmacy majors in a secondary vocationalschool in Weihai as subjects, with one being experimental class and the other being controlledclass. In the experimental class, based on the analysis of the students learning difficulties andneeds, the author tried to design new teaching models according to the teaching principles ofTBLT, whereas in the controlled class the lessons were still conducted by the traditionalteaching method. The teaching experiment lasted for a school term. Based on the analysis ofthe collected data, the main results were as follows: The application of the TBLT to theteaching of Pharmaceutical English, compared with the traditional teaching, could, to acertain degree better improve students’ English achievements, stimulate their learning interestand further enhance their learning antinomy. Therefore, we might say that the application ofthe TBLT to the teaching of Pharmaceutical English is plausible and effective, and it couldhelp to cultivate students’ Pharmaceutical English skills and abilities needed in their futurework and life.
