W.E.B Du Bois is not only an insightful scholar, but also a successful writer, editorand magazine founder. At the same time, he is a great ideologist, social activist andthe father of the Pan-African movement. He is the leading of African-Americanmovement. Because of the multiple roles, he is always ignored the role of educator.Based on his books, speech and papers, this paper focuses on his educational theory,summarizes his educational contribution and the impact of modern African-Americaneducation.After introducing his life story and the background of African-Americaneducation after civil war, the paper compares the essential points of Du Bois andother important thinkers. For example, the debate between Du Bois and Washingtonshows the relationship of classical education and industrial education; the discussionwith Cooper indicates his attitude for the education of black female; the sameunderstanding with Woodson expresses his emphasis of the true history and cultureof African; the supplement for the democratic theory of Dewey predicting theimportance of aware of multiple culture and races.According to analyzing the key points of the educational theory of Du Bois, thispaper tries to state his educational mind. Du Bois deeply believes that education canchange the society and move up the African-American in USA. It is the mostimportant thing for the whole race.“The Talented Tenth” theory spread widely,however, with Du Bois aging and experience, it changed by time. From educating themost talented African-Americans to providing opportunities for all, it’s the process ofthe growth of Du Bois. Also, Du Bois has his own meaningful understanding of historyand culture of Africa. He indicates that the root of solving the Negro problem ishelping the Negros knowing their own culture and history better, rather than theindustrial skill. His global study and traveling also attributes to his theory a lot.Last but not the least, the educational theory of African-American of Dubois,resulting from the specific history period and culture background, provided adifferent vision of thinking. More importantly, in the educational history, his theory both apply to the past and current, probably future situations..
