With the development of the society and the economy, the problem of energy consumption and pollution of the environment has become increasingly prominent. So green, low-carbon and energy saving have attracted more and more attention from people. In recent years, communications industries have kept the concept of Green Communication and promoted energy conservation vigorously. Also, they have achieved remarkable results in both reducing costs and promoting the concept of low-carbon in society. In this paper, we present the simulations and analyses to the energy consumption of the modulation strategies over fading channels based on energy saving. We also show the best modulation strategy in a given distance for a given channel to minimize the energy consumption of the communication system. At first, we get the figures of the BER versus signal noise ratio (SNR) to show the performance of three modulation strategies and analyze the relationship of BER and constellation size or fading parameters of channels to prepare to calculate the energy consumption. And then, the paper introduces the energy model of a digital modulation over fading channels in detail and gives a model of transceiver circuit blocks for the communication link between two wireless nodes. We take MPSK over a AWGN channel for an example to show how to calculate the total energy consumption. In the next part of this paper, we compare the total energy consumption and the transmission energy among three modulation strategies to find the best modulation strategy under a special condition. Finally, we integrate diversity combining technologies into the model, take MRC (Maximal Ratio Combining) for an example to show how to analyze the BER of MPSK over fading channels and show the performance of MPSK and MQAM over fading channels. We also give the analyses of energy consumption of MPSK and MQAM with3-fold MRC over fading channels.
